Parrots of the Caribbean 2010

The Rotary Club of Madison, Alabama announced they will host their eighth annual Parrots of the Caribbean, an outdoor evening of live music, food, and libations, Saturday, August 21st, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 11:00 pm at #58 Martin Street in Downtown Madison.

Parrotheads and music lovers everywhere are invited to don their grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts, and island wear to enjoy dancing, raffle baskets, and a fabulous island theme – all to be found right in downtown Madison! In its 8th year, this fund raising event has grown from a small gathering of Madison Rotarians in a community clubhouse to a spectacular event attended by over 500 guests from all over the Southeast. This year’s musical guest is Four on the Floor Playing an eclectic blend of music from the golden ages of rock and roll (50′s – 80′s), Four on the Floor is sure to please. Also, joining the party this year is Curtis Jordan, well known and talented steel drum musician.

The smell of Island Burgers and Dogs will “wet” your appetite, with beverages including soft drinks, beer and wine available for purchase as well. All guests must be 21 or older and are encouraged to bring their ID’s, blankets, and lawn chairs. Coolers, pets, strollers, and outside food and drink are not permitted. This event is held rain or shine.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the night of the event and can be purchased from Madison Rotarians or online (http://madisonalrotary.org/parrots) with an additional online ticketing service charge of $2.28 per ticket. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone using a credit card starting 1 month prior to the event. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Madison Rotary Club’s local community and international projects such as, the Madison YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Triana, world-wide polio eradication, humanitarian support in Honduras and Haiti, and various other local and international educational projects.

Relay For Life 2010

Hi Rotarians and Friends!

This is a reminder that we need at least 15 team members to register for the American Cancer Society Relay 4 Life no later than 5 March 2010. Donations are not due until April 15th but we need team members to register as soon as possible to get our allotment of shirts. So far we only have 2 team members and donations are being collected.

Fighting cancer is a team effort.

The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone. How can you help? You can join the team with a goal of raising at least $150 for the team and the ACS, or, donate to any team members. No matter what you do all of you are welcome at the event.

10th Annual Miles Montgomery Golf Tournament

Please plan to come out and help Madison Rotary Club support our local Madison community by participating in the

10th Annual Miles Montgomery Golf Tournament

on Friday, April 9, 2010

at the Redstone Arsenal Golf Links.

The tournament will be a “shot-gun” start 8:30AM and will be a 4-Person Scramble format. Local businesses and Corporations are encouraged to sponsor teams and compete for a chance at a trophy which you can proudly display at your business.

The entry fee is $75 per golfer, $300 per team and $400 for a Corporate Team, which also includes a Hole Sponsorship.

This fee includes Range Balls, Cart, Give-away bags and an on-site lunch following the Tournament.

Team prizes will be given away for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Teams (and maybe even a little something for the last place team). The winning Corporate Team will also receive a Trophy. Various contests will occur on the course during the tournament for additional chances to win individual prizes.

Honduras Eco-Stove Project

The Madison Rotary Club working with the Choluteca Rotary Club of Honduras built 100 total Eco-Stoves in 2009 that provide increased efficiency, improved health, decreased environmental impacts (decreased deforestation and emissions) and long term cost savings over the existing inefficient and essentially open pit wood burning stoves in use today. A major benefit of the Eco-stove is an increased surface area that allows multiple items to be cooked at one time. Existing stoves only allow one or two items, depending on the number of open holes in the stove, to be cooked simultaneously. Eco-Stoves free up significant time from cooking and maintaining fires for the women who typically do all the cooking. The villages of San Juan Ariba and San Juan Cito have a few demonstration stoves built by the Madison Rotary Club last year, and this year we collectively built another 44 stoves in their communities, and 56 in the village of El Jocote, Honduras. All Eco-Stove components were manufactured in Honduras. This project supported the training of Honduras personnel to build these Eco-stoves and promotes the local economy with additional work skills. Our effort supports personal health for women and children, environmental improvements and Rotary International initiatives. Madison Rotary Ecostove Construction Instructions
1	These instructions assume starting with a clean base. The old stove can be removed, or a new base built.
2	If the back of the stove does not butt up to a wall, additional work must be done to create the back of the stove. The drawings assume a wall.
3	Set up two adobe blocks for the side opposite the clean out.
4	Install the coffee can, full size adobe block and an adobe block cut to size.
5	Build up the back of the stove as illustrated. This requires lots of mud, block (brick) and two 22″ rerod. This includes the clean out area and the wall with a draft hole.
6	Assemble the fire brick into the fire box configuration. Use mud to hold in place. Build the front wall and install a block (brick) at the base behind the firebox.
7	Add enough ash to support the two block (brick) crosswise and fill with ash to the top of the crosswise brick in the front and to the bottom of the draft hole in the back.
8	Use mud to smooth and level the top of the stove.
9	Build the chimney base with block ( brick) and two 8.5″ rerod
10	Install the stove pipe (prior to stove constructing, make sure that the pipe will extend through the roof, does not interfere with windows or other obstructions)
11	Set Planchea in place. Make sure the extra protection welded underneath is over the firebox.
12	Install temporary cardboard or other material around the planchea that when removed would create a gap ~1/8″ between the planchea and cement .
13	Build a wood frame around the top of the stove. The frame should be even with the sides of the stove and the top of the planches. Approximately 1 – 1.5″ thick.
14	Mix cement and poor into and smooth to create the stove top.
15	Use cement to create a teepee from the top of the chimney base to secure the stove pipe.
16	Smooth all sides with mud throughout the construction process.
17	When dry, remove the wood frame and material around the planchea.

Welcome to RYLA: The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Program is an intensive leadership training program for high school students. The basics of the program are discussed in the document below (PDF). If you have additional questions or concerns, the RYLA Coordinator named on page one of the formal application is available by phone or email or you may visit http://www.rotary.org .

WHAT: RYLA 2010 is a program sponsored by Rotary International, but conducted by the Local Rotary District on a regional basis. Rotary District 6860 and the Rotary Clubs of Huntsville, Greater Huntsville and Madison, plan and conduct the annual North Alabama RYLA Program in partnership with the US Space and Rocket Center. Individual Rotary Clubs solicit applicants and select those they wish to sponsor. Each participating club plans to sponsor at least two students each year.

WHO: High School sophomore, junior and senior students may apply and be considered. Participants are selected on the basis of their academic achievements, school and community service activities, their hobbies and recreational interests and a short paragraph about, “Why I want to attend RYLA”.

WHERE: RYLA 2010 will take place at The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Students will stay at the center in “camp-type” housing with 24 hour supervision provided by staff counselors.

WHEN: January 28-30, 2010.

WHY: RYLA offers young future leaders an opportunity to meet in an exciting setting to share fellowship, develop leadership skills, and learn decision making skills based on the Rotary Four-Way Test:
Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

COST: There are no fees for the applicant. All costs for RYLA are paid by the sponsoring Rotary Club

Completed applications must be returned to your local RYLA Coordinator at the address below not later than January 11, 2010.

Triana Boys and Girls Club Library Destroyed by Fire

The Triana Library was destroyed, and the Boys & Girls Club of Triana as well, by a fire Sunday evening, (September 20, 2009, initial reports say a lightening strike started the fire). It is our understanding that the Administration of the Huntsville/Madison County Library has been and will continue to work with the officials in Triana for the good of the kids so affected by this tragedy. I’m sure that we will hear in the coming weeks, how we can help as well. If you would like to contribute in some way to the rebuilding and recovery of the Boys and Girls club, please contact us.

UPDATE: 9/28/2009:

The Town of Triana has opened an account with First Commercial Bank for donations to the Boys and Girls Club. The account is titled Town Of Traina Library- Boys & Girls Club Building Release Fund. Coach Lewis, who said they already have some corporate donors earmarking funds toward a new building!

Madison Employees of the Year

The Rotary Club of Madison honored three Madison city employees at the Madison City Council meeting on Monday, May 11th. Debbie Overcash, chair of our club’s Community Recognition Committee, coordinated the 9th annual event where Brandon Burgess was named Fire Fighter of the Year, Russell Owens was recognized as Police Officer of the Year, and Kim Lindsey was honored as City Employee of the Year. Mayor Paul Finley, Council President Tommy Overcash, and Madison Rotary President Alex Luttrell congratulated the winners and presented each with a plaque and $200 as Debbie read excerpts from their nomination applications. The winners’ names will also appear on perpetual plaques displayed in City Hall. Congratulations to the winners and “Thank You” to all Madison City employees who do a great job in providing services to our citizens.

Madison Hospital Update
David Spillers serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Huntsville Hospital. He joined Huntsville Hospital in March 2006.

Mr. Spillers began his health care career in 1981 with UNISYS Corporation designing and implementing software for the health care industry. In 1986 he joined Health Care Data Systems, a data processing center providing services for 28 health care facilities across five states. Mr. Spillers served as Vice President of External Operations and part owner.

Mr. Spillers joined Mission Hospitals in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1988, a regional referral center for 17 counties in western North Carolina that also owned two rural facilities. He was serving as Chief Operating Officer prior to coming to Huntsville Hospital.

Mr. Spillers received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration/Computer Science from Winthrop College and his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Mr. Spillers is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and Health Care Financial Management Association. He is also a member of the Huntsville Rotary Club, the Huntsville Committee of 100, and the Alabama Hospital Association. Mr. Spillers serves on the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Emergency Response Commission on Health Care Crisis for the State of Alabama. He has also been appointed to the Alabama State Health Planning and Development Agency’s Statewide Health Coordinating Council.

Mr. Spillers and his wife Cindy are originally from York, South Carolina.
